COACH'S CREED: COACHES NEVER LOSE
A coach knows full well if they have won or lost long before the puck is dropped or the outcome of a game is decided. Any team can win or lose a game, but on a certain higher level, a coach never loses.
A coach has two tasks. The minor one is to teach game skills - to teach a player how to skate faster, shoot harder, check smarter and execute more efficiently.
The second and more daunting task is to instill life skills. It is to teach an attitude about life, to implant values of character, integrity and commitment so they can use these skills to be successful in their everyday lives. It is to teach fair play, to be humble in victory and proud in defeat. It is to take pride in the effort, the sacrifice and in the team itself. It is to teach young people how they can live up to their ultimate potential no matter what that potential might be.
For a coach, the final score doesn't read "so many goals for our team, so many goals for theirs." It doesn't read "this many wins and this many loses." Instead, it simply reads: "So many lives affected, so much potential realized."
This is the score that will never be published, yet this is the score that will be read in the silence of a coach's own thoughts. And, inevitably, this is where a true coach will find their real joy long after the final game has been played.
TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT MISSION STATEMENT:
Our mission is to promote the game of hockey and use it as a vehicle to instill values of leadership, teamwork and integrity in our players that will carry on with them throughout their lives. In developing the Cyclones program, we first decided on the common principles and values that we wanted to promote and get recognition for in the hockey community. We created the following statement:
"Play Hard, Play Smart, Play Together."
Play Hard
We will make a commitment to being the hardest working team on the ice, competing for every loose puck, every shift, every minute of every game. This starts in practice and transcends into everything we do. There are no short cuts in the game of hockey, effort is directly proportionate to reward. We will train and play with passion, purpose and pride. Play Smart
We are not going to have 5 players chasing the puck all over the ice. We will implement a core set of team principles, systems and objectives consistent with all levels. With repetition we will develop the great habits and instincts needed to truly be successful at the game. Playing Smart also means being disciplined; adhering to team goals, not taking selfish penalties and always being in control of your emotions. Play Together
Champions are not the most individually talented players; they are the most dedicated to team success. For the Cyclones program, team unity is paramount. This stems from the coaches and is mirrored by the players and parents, having everyone supporting and pulling together in the same direction. This will be seen in how our players sacrifice themselves to block shots, take checks and hacks to make a play and pump each other up on the bench. It will be seen in how our parents handle themselves in the stands, applauding good play on both sides and refraining from yelling out at other parents, players or referees. Finally it will be seen from our coaching staff, supporting the players, recognizing and rewarding unselfish play, and organizing team functions away from the rink.
