 Dear Cyclones Families,
As we closeout the 2005 -2006 fall and spring hockey seasons and my first year as your President, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you; parents, players, managers, coaches, board members and staff. Together, we have enjoyed the most successful season in the 7-year history of the Cyclones. No other club equaled the success we achieved in this year’s Blackhawk Cup State Tournament…no one. AHAI, club Presidents, board members and families from other associations have reached out to me with congratulations on our outstanding accomplishments this past year. It was also a pleasure to welcome a number of new, quality families (from other clubs) into the Cyclones family this spring. Obviously, our success has not gone unnoticed by the IL hockey community. All of you, as part of the Cyclones family should stand very proud.
Success breeds success… we have only just began. This year’s very high level of success was accomplished through our continued focus on player development. This will not change for the future. We will continue the momentum of success into next season and beyond by maintaining and/or enhancing all the core elements involved with the development of ALL our players.
In our dedicated efforts to continually improve our program and the opportunities for our members, we are implementing several new enhancements for the fall.
These include:
- Tot hockey offered to local Park Districts
- Improved development programming and reduced costs for the In House Program
- The rebirth of the Cyclones NorthWest Hockey League (House) Program
- CSDHL and NIHL fees within approximately $300 of each other.
- Treadmill training for all travel skaters – CSDHL through Bronze
- Goalies fees reduced to 50%.
- Increased Fundraising opportunities – we want to make sure all players have the opportunity to play at all levels.
- Marketing the program in local schools, park districts, stores and restaurants along with promotional signage and flyers on display at the rink.
- Added a very knowledgeable & experienced Midget Development Coordinator. He will promote the Cyclones Midget division, educate families on options after Midget hockey and then help our players move on to the next level.
For those players who would like to continue to hone their hockey skills this summer, there are a number of GREAT clinics or Rink Rat hockey being offered @ Fox Valley Ice Area. Please remember that the Cyclones website: www.cycloneshockey.net is a very useful tool available to you to get and receive the most current information. Please check it regularly for updates or to access the email addresses of the board members and staff for any additional questions or needs that you may have. As in the past, our Fall Registration Packet will be mailed to you by the end of July.
On behalf of all the Cyclones Board Members and Staff, we wish you and your family a very safe and relaxing summer.
Warmest regards,
Douglas Becht
President

I heard a speaker this past weekend and wanted to pass on the message he was delivering, I found it very fitting for our club. The speech was titled, “Two-Twelve” and maybe some of you have heard it before.
It was a very simple but effective example of everyday life based on water temperature. The required amount of heat needed to turn water into steam is 212 degrees. At 211 degrees, water is obviously extremely hot – but it needs one more single degree of heat to transform into steam. At 2-12, water harnesses enough energy and power to run a locomotive.
The message here is that most people give up trying before they succeed; not realizing that in many cases one more single degree of energy would change their world dramatically.
This can be seen at almost every level with our club, after years of building the program, of getting our heads beat in by bigger clubs, by better clubs, we stayed committed to player development, put forth the extra energy both on and off the ice away from the game, and then produced more championship flags than ever before this year. Even with less than half the membership of some clubs, no other club in the State won more.
For the teams and families have not reached the “212” point yet, increase your effort and stay the course – success is just around the corner. The natural law in sports is that time and energy = success. The more time and energy you put in, the more success you will have. This natural law is independent of levels, positions, coaches or equipment and holds the single most important key to success. This does not happen in a single game, or in a single season, it takes years to develop and a lifetime to perfect. The exciting thing is that our club as a whole is starting to realize this.
Our goal within the next five years is to be the largest and most successful club in the State. It will not be an easy road; we are going to count on your continued support. If we can get an additional degree of effort from everyone, it will have a major impact on the success and opportunities for all our kids now and tomorrow.

The Cyclones Bantam White Team participated in the Johnny's Ice House Spring Tournament May 19 - 21, 2006 at Johnny's Ice House in Chicago.
The first game, on Friday night was against the Jets from Johnny's Ice House. The Cyclones ended up winning 4-3, coming from behind in the last two minutes of the game.
Our second game was against Crystal Lake on Saturday morning. The Cyclones jumped off to an early lead, and with excellent play by all, ended up winning 8-0.

Our third game found us facing the Bluehawks from Northbrook. Once again the Cyclones were ready to play and came away with another victory, 8-0. Goals in this game were scored by Justin Vanderee(1), Ryan Foy(1), Brendan Conroy(1), James Benda(1), Brian Koczka(2) and Christian Esposito(2).
The Championship Game on Sunday morning found us facing the Jets again. For this game, it was quite obvious that both teams had come to WIN. After three hard fought, back and forth periods, the final score was Cyclones 3 and the Jets 2. Goals in this game were scored by James Benda, John Waghorne and Christian Esposito. The Cyclones forwards were supported by the excellent play of their defensemen.
Member of the Cyclones Bantam White team are: Jordan Ness, Ryan Foy, Justin Vanderee, Brian Koczka, Brendan Conroy, Eric Boewe, James Benda, John Waghorne, Christian Esposito, Nick Esposito, Troy Collins, Nic Rakowski and Max Channon. Congratulations to Dr. David Glenn. Two of his Bantam Central States players were selected to participate in the AHAI and USA Hockey Player Development Camp in April. Joe Benda and Brian Cornick were selected from a list of players recommended by the coaches as well as from previous evaluation records.
68 players at the 1991 age level were invited to participate in several games to evaluate their skills and talent at this point in the season. From this Camp, 36 players were selected to attend the 1991 Player Development Camp in Chesterfield, MO. from June 18 - 23.
This in quite an honor for these two boys, and is due largely to the hard work both on and off the ice with Dr. David Glenn and Coach Cappas this past season.

It was the final game of the regular season and with ninety-two seconds remaining; the Sabres pulled their goalie in an effort to overcome a 2 goal deficit. Unlike some earlier games, the Cyclones Squirt Blue Team took an early lead and never looked back.
When the team met for the first time in early March, going undefeated seemed as likely as spotting Gordie Howe at a Britney Spears concert. But after 12 games in 39 days, the Team posted an undefeated record of 10-0-2 to win the division in the 2006 South West Spring League.
It was our initial meeting that Coach Joe brought seventeen boys together to make introductions. You see, most of the boys had just moved up from Mite and the majority came from the Cyclones House program. One-by-one they introduced themselves and declared their goals for this short season. For some it was scoring, others it was to skate faster. As they all stood together one thing was clear, size was to our advantage.
The coaches impressed upon the boys that “dedication equals results equals fun.” The boys stayed dedicated throughout weekly practice and power skates, some even canceling and/or scaling back spring break vacations at their own discretion. The results speak for themselves and the celebrations were evident.
The first-half of the season was where the lines got to know each other and the coaches know the boys. They out-scored their opponents 2-to-1 and tied two games. It was the second-half where the team clicked and the scoring differential increased to 4-to-1. As the season rolled into May they played like a team full of confidence, even when playing from behind.
The forward lines all contributed to the scoring and the defense unselfishly cleared the puck while playing in front of outstanding goaltending. Ending the season with a GAA of 1.58 demonstrates the total team effort.
The playoffs began with a rematch against the Sabres from four days prior. Momentum shifted period-to-period and 2-2 was the score after regulation. In a dramatic 3rd overtime breakaway our boys earned the privilege to take on the Flames. Indicative of their maturity, the celebration was restrained until the locker room door closed.
From the opening face-off to the empty-netter, the game had all the excitement you’d expect from a Championship game. One goal was the difference for all but a few minutes of the match. The Flames prevailed but the Cyclones were winners in the hearts of the parents and coaches.
For me, the way I’ll remember the season isn’t the final game but the familiar pre-game routine. Seventeen boys making their way from the locker room to the ice with Coach Joe yelling and the boys responding, “17 plus Zero – One! . . . . . . . 17 plus zero – Team!”
The parents and players want to give special thanks to Coach Joe [Hartge] Coach Bob [Behnke] Coach Doug [Peters] and Coach Jim [Doyle] for their time spent teaching our kids to love this game.

Good things happen to those who practice hard, practice right and have fun. That was one of the many lessons learned by the Cyclones Mite Red team. All spring long Coach Brad and Coach Josh taught the young pucksters that hard work in practice leads to success. And success they had. During the SWSL regular season, the Cyclones skated their way to a 9-2-1 record earning them a first place tie and #2 seed in the championship tournament.
Playing the Vikings in the semi-finals was a true test of will and determination. Being favored but trailing 4-2 with under two minutes left in the 2nd period, the Cyclones struck back with two quick goals to tie the game. The second goal was a beautiful backhander scored by Graham Lillibridge with no time left on the clock. With momentum fully on the Cyclones' side, they scored twice in the 3rd period and held onto a hard fought 6-4 victory.
With confidence high, the Cyclones took the ice in the championship game to face the Hawks. Early jitters and some shaky defense put the Cyclones in an early 2-0 hole. But once gain they fought back. A total team effort (offense, defense and stellar goaltending from Adam Scheel) enabled the Cyclones to roar back with 7 straight goals and claim the SWSL Championship with a convincing 8-4 victory.
